You can’t disable Live Captions on Pixels anymore?
Not being able to turn off Live Caption on my Pixel 8 feels like a small change, but it’s been really annoying. I’ve always had Live Caption disabled on my phone. It was never something I wanted or needed, and that setting worked fine, until recently. After what seems to be the January 2026 update, the option to turn it off is now grayed out. I didn’t change anything, but suddenly the choice is gone.
This isn’t about Live Caption being a bad feature. I am sure it’s helpful for a lot of people, especially those who rely on captions to understand audio. The problem is that it’s now forced on, even for users like me who clearly turned it off before. Captions now pop up during videos, voice messages, or random sounds, and it breaks the flow of just using my phone normally.

What makes it worse is how unclear everything is. There’s no explanation in the settings, no message after the update, and no obvious reason why the toggle is disabled. You can dig through menus like “Languages & translation,” but it doesn’t actually fix anything. It feels like either a bug or a silent change that no one bothered to explain i guess since in the official google page there are instruction on how to disable it.
This whole situation maybe points to a bigger issue with smartphones today. Features are supposed to help, not take control away from the user. Accessibility options should always be available, but they should also always be optional. If this change really did come with the January 2026 update, it’s a reminder that updates shouldn’t remove the choice.
